The municipality of Övertorneå was one of the first members of the Swedish green city-network "Ekokommuner" and has a long tradition in working locally on climate protection. A lot of practical projects on energy and climate change have already been implemented, but the municipality recognises a need to go a step further by working on adaptation.
In 2009 a new project called Arctic Boreal Climate Development started with a strong network of business and university partners (i.e. LKAB Sweden and Sveriges Lantbruksuniversitet). The project deals with sustainable bioenergy production under a warming climate.
Övertorneå municipality will serve as a pilot community for the NNCC project, specifically aiming at improved cooperation with partner municipalities and stakeholders in Finland.
